St Joseph's, Tara - Term 4 Week 6 2021 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear parents and carers,
Preparing for Prep
Wonderful parent engagement sessions occurred this week. Parents of 2022 prep students received some great practical ideas from the school's counsellor and TCSO's Occupational and Speech and Language Therapists to help prepare themselves and their child, for the transition into Prep. Special thanks goes to our guest speakers.
Hear and Say
Free hearing tests for the early identification of hearing health problems were offered and conducted as well this week. The Hear and Say team provide a much needed service in the Tara area.
Choice and Affordability Funding
In the next two weeks all families will be notified of their funding allocation that will be credited to your account for fees or booklist items or uniforms.
Prep and other year level Transition Days
Our last transition day will be
- Tuesday 23rd November - 8:40 am - 2:50 pm. Please also include a packed lunch for this all day session.
There will be a Telehealth end of year celebration with cupcakes on this day!
Camp Coolum
What an enthusiastic response to camp! At this stage we have 30 students attending, five staff and many keen parents. Please ensure all forms and money are in by Monday 15 November (No school on Friday 12 November). I commend the P & F for their financial support of student needs. The funds our P & F has provided, together with the school's camp budget, has made it affordable, enabling all students to be able to attend our educational Camp with their peers. So students, how are you going with your $20 worth of chores?
Learning Super Powers 4 & 5: Resilience and Self-Motivation
Students are consolidating their understanding of the learning super powers and are practising them each day. P-2 have set challenging goals for learning and I have experienced the Year 2 students checking their learning against the steps needed for success.
Remembrance Day
RSL president, Mr Brian Woodham, spoke to the students, staff and parents in attendance at assembly about Remembrance Day. He shared lots of fascinating information and stories about World War 1 & 11, including the reasons behind them and the consequences of these wars. Well done to our school leaders Kandice and Pippa for their confident vote of thanks and learnings.
Graduation and Awards Night (24 November at 5.30 pm)
All families are warmly invited to St. Joseph's to share in this special night as we farewell our much loved year sixes, Pippa McDonald, Kandice Nystrom, Tyzah Phillips and Braydon Clark. Together we will give thanks for the unique gifts that these students have shared with our school community. Graduation will be followed by the Awards night.
Yarning Circle
Please join us to open the Yarning Circle on Friday 26 November at 2pm. Come, celebrate and learn about Indigenous culture, experience Barrungam language. Share the sacred Yarning Circle space with its beautiful story poles, created with Peter Mulcahy, the rocks donated by the Logan and Nitske families, touch and smell the indigenous plants donated by Bunnings in Dalby, and learn about their uses. Join in our art and craft activities and afternoon tea.
Report Cards
Students and teachers are working on assessment ready for report cards to be issued on Friday 26 November.
May your week be one where you can find joy in the simple things of life, like the beauty of a flower, the aroma of a coffee or the feel of freshly washed sheets.

SCHOOL FEES
I encourage all families to carefully plan their budget so that outstanding fees are paid by 19th November at the latest. Continuing to make regular fee payments over the Christmas school holidays will certainly help keep your budget on track.
2022 Term fees will increase by $5 per term, bringing the annual school fee total from $800 to $820. Please note this is the first fee increase in five years.
HOW TO PAY YOUR SCHOOL FEES:
*Cash
*Direct Deposit:
Bank: ADF
Name: St Joseph’s School

Thank you to those making regular payments and/or have their account up to date. Could I please ask everyone to check how their account is travelling. If it doesn’t seem to be reducing as quickly as you would like, I recommend increasing or begin making regular fortnightly payments via cash, direct deposit or Centrepay deductions to help manage the fees more comfortably.
Bus Notification Reminder: Please notify the school if your child's bus travel arrangements change by 2:30pm each afternoon.
If your child is being picked up instead of catching the bus home or is required to catch the bus instead of being picked up then the school needs to know before 2:30pm. Our staff have a duty of care to ensure your children get home safely, in accordance to the arrangements you have advised.
ABSENCES: Please notify the school whenever your child is absent.
Could I please ask those families who received an Unexplained Absences Explanation Request Form and have not returned them or notified the office to do so asap. These forms will now be sent out on a fortnightly basis and are to be returned by the Friday of that week please.
We understand that there are valid reasons for your child not to attend school e.g. They are sick. Please be aware that the following examples are not acceptable reasons for keeping them home from school.
If your child:
- Doesn't feel like coming to school
- Thinks it's too wet, cold, hot or the work is too hard or too easy
- Stays home when another sibling is sick or a family member has an appointment or is going shopping out of town
- Had a disagreement with their best friend
- Got into trouble or thinks they might get into trouble at school
- Is embarrassed about something that happened the day before
- Has an activity or subject on that day they don't like
Wellbeing
Have fun with the daily activities on our Happiness Calendar. See how many you can achieve. We will also be focusing on a different Key to Happiness (below) each fortnight.
Our Fifth Key to Happiness is - Trying Out.
Learning affects our wellbeing in lots of positive ways. It exposes us to new ideas and helps us stay curious and engaged. It also gives us a sense of accomplishment and helps boost our self-confidence and resilience. There are many ways to learn new things - not just through formal qualifications. We can share a skill with friends, join a club, learn to sing, play a new sport and so much more.
From the Learning Environment
TeleHealth
Next year, we will be able to provide Speech Language Pathology sessions for our students through the University of Queensland for the sixth year.
This service is provided through the QGC Health-e-Regions initiative and has become an integral part of our speech language support here at St Joseph’s.
Students participate in a series of 12 one on one sessions with a 4th year speech pathologist student from the University and are engaged in online activities to spark their imaginations and talents.
All parents and interested persons are invited to join us for afternoon tea to celebrate our successes in this program and our sixth year of participation. This milestone wouldn’t be possible without the support and involvement from our students, their families, the wonderful staff and students of the University of Queensland and of course the sensational financial support from Shell QGC. This afternoon celebration will be held at our school on the afternoon of Tuesday the 23 November from 1:15 to 2:15.
Please join us on the day to CELEBRATE.
