St Joseph's, Tara - Term 1 Week 10 2022 Newsletter
Our Vision & Mission Statements
From the Principal
Dear parents and carers,
Term 1
It has been a shorter term and one filled with exciting learning and other activities.
Camp
A big shout out to all involved in the wonderful St. Joseph's camp at Coolum! The students demonstrated amazing learning curiosity, behaviour, team work, courage culture and responsiblility for their belongings and great care for each other. The parents and staff did an outstanding job as role models and team members for the wellbeing, learning and safety of all students. Great job everyone! Enjoy the photos from camp.
Learning Meetings
Together with the teachers, we would like to thank those parents and students who have already shared in the three way learning meetings for their children. Please contact the teacher to arrange a suitable time for your three way meeting. Research shows that when learners, parents and teachers collaborate about student learning, a child's learning is maximised.
Last Day of Term 2
Students are invited to bring a gold coin and wear coloured clothes tomorrow, Friday 1 April. Please bring your usual healthy morning tea and lunch. There will be an end of Term One food party after lunch.
Term 2
I look forward to seeing everyone after the Easter holidays on Wednesday 20 April. Teachers will be attending Inspire Maths professional development in Toowoomba while you are holidaying on 19th April.
Easter
I wish you a blessed Easter. Enjoy time with your family and take time to remember the events of Holy Week and Easter Sunday.

HOLY WEEK and EASTER
Over the holidays the church will celebrate Holy Week and Easter Sunday. This is a major part of our story as Christians. It is the story of Jesus’ amazing courage and love, of the crowd’s anger and violence, of a friend’s betrayal and the wonder of the resurrection, of new life. The women at the empty tomb were filled with great joy and hope and they raced to share the wonderful news with the disciples and today this news has spread around the world offering joy and hope to all.
Today the students prayed as they explored the events of Palm Sunday through to Good Friday. We are all looking forward to celebrating on Easter Sunday.
An Easter Prayer
Christ Jesus is here-
Here,
As on the first day:
Here among us eternally,
As on Easter morning;
Here with us forever
As fully as on the first day;
Here in our midst
Through all the days of his eternity:
For he is risen!
ALLELUIA!

Father Jack's Message
We all need celebrations. They remind us of the importance of events that have happened in the past. We have many, but to mention one, the anniversary of our birth. It was an occassion of joy for our father and mother. Now that you are of age you have come to appreciate who you are and the love and care that your parents have given you over the years.
In a few weeks time we will remember and celebrate Jesus' love for us in his dying and offering his prayer on the Cross. We remember his Resurrection to a new life as he rose from the grave. We celebrate the event in remembrance of this God-Saviour person who has given us the promise of a glorified life after our death.
It's with Thanksgiving that we recall all that Jesus did in showing us the true meaning of life.
We do it. Lest We Forget. That's what we say. Happy Easter.
Shalom
Fr Jack MacGinley

LEARNING AT ST JOSEPH'S
Reading At Home
Some Helpful Hints...
Make it Routine
Find a quiet, comfortable spot that becomes the go-to reading spot with your child. It’s about finding the right time for you and your child. Whether it be just before they go to bed, or first thing in the morning. Do what works for you!
Ease Into The Book
Get your child thinking about what the book might be about by asking some questions before you start reading. Here are some examples of what you could ask:
- What do you think this book is about? Why?
- Do you think this is a story or a fact book? Why?
- Can you read the title? Does this give you some more clues?
- What can you notice about the picture on the front of the book?
Don’t Tell Them, Guide Them
If you tell your child every word they get stuck on, they won’t learn to use the reading strategies they are learning at school and will expect you to tell them every time. This isn’t going to help them to develop and grow as readers.
Here are some basic reading strategies your child may have been taught in the classroom:
- Can they use the picture to help?
- Stretch out the word – so for the word shouted – ‘sh-ou-ted’.
- Can they look for chunks in the word, or smaller words in a larger word – so for shouted – they could see ‘shout’, or ‘out’.
- Can they sound out the word?
- Get them to read to the end of the sentence for further clues. What would make sense?
- Ask them to work out the first sound of the word and get their mouth ready for the word.
Make it Enjoyable!
Reading is meant to be a fun enjoyable time with your child.
Comprehension is Important
When they have finished reading the book. Ask a few questions to check for comprehension.
They don’t have to be difficult questions, here are a few that you may like to ask:
- What was your favourite part of the book and why?
- How did you feel when you read that story?
- What did you learn from this story?
- What was the problem in the story?
- Which character did you like and why?
ENJOY YOUR READING

P & F News
Thank you to the families that have returned their volunteer forms. Our school runs on Volunteers, without your help many of the fun activities and programmes undertaken here at school would be impossible.
Futures Group Youth Disco - A huge thank you to the Tara Futures Group for having the P&F cater at the Disco and also to the principal and parents for volunteering and making the event such a success. We all loved to see the children get their groove on and dance into the evening. We even spotted some of the parents on the dance floor.
Tuckshop - A big thank you to all the families for your orders and support for Term 1! We are still in urgent need of volunteers for tuckshop duty. If you require another form, please contact the office for either the Volunteer or Induction form. They can be emailed to you or sent home with your child.

Wellbeing
Have fun with the daily activities on our Happiness Calendar. See how many you can achieve. We will also be focusing on a different Key to Happiness (below) each fortnight.
Our Tenth Key to Happiness is - Meaning.
Meaning matters for happiness
People who have a sense of meaning in life tend to experience more frequent and stronger positive emotions; feel more positive about the future; have greater life satisfaction; have higher psychological wellbeing; have more satisfying relationships; use their character strengths more and feel better about themselves. Meaning in life is associated with physical health benefits such as reporting fewer ill-health symptoms, lower risk of heart disease, stronger immune systems and being less likely to engage in behaviours that undermine physical health. It also seems to help us live well for longer. People reporting higher meaning in life tend to have lower levels of physical and cognitive decline and live to an older age.
Meaning matters at work too. Feeling that our work is meaningful has positive benefits both at work and beyond. It predicts higher life satisfaction, meaning in life in general and better physical health. It is also strongly related to how engaged we feel in our work and our levels of job satisfaction.

Tuckshop
ROSTER
We are in urgent need of helpers for tuckshop duty on Thursdays. We would love to see everyone joining in. It usually works out that you're rostered on twice a term. But with 'More hands making light work' it would certainly be less. Without your help tuckshop will not be able to continue.
