Welcome to the Week 8 Newsletter!
South West Regional Athletics
A huge congratulations to Aldrich Imperial who was selected to compete at the South West Regional Athletics this week in St George. Aldrich was selected for the 1500m and we wish him the very best and know that he will give it his best and do St Joseph's proud.
Thank you P&F!
A big thank you to our wonderful P&F who have been very busy organising and coordinating fundraising events for the Year 3-6 camp as well as their own fundraising to support the school to purchase student resources. The tireless work they do is amazing and all done in their own time. The last event was a food stall at the Tara Kite Festival where they made and served various Indian dishes for the community to enjoy!
I know they are needing, and would appreciate, more support from our wider parent body. The support can come in many different ways from volunteering on the day for even the shortest amount of time, donating items, attending meetings to share ideas, help in the tuckshop. Any small aount of volunterring you can provide will always be with the support of the P&F as many hands make light work.
The next event is a bake sale on Friday 8th September run by the Year 3-6 parent group. We are very appreciative to Lesley Truebody for this great idea and taking on the coordination of this fundraiser. Lesley requires the support of the Year 3-6 parent body to donate baked items and/or their time on the day of the sale. Please contact Lesley via the school office and your message will be forwarded onto her.
Relationships and Sexual Education (RSE) Programme
As per the notification and letter sent via the Parent Portal last Tuesday (22nd August), students across all year levels have been involved in the Toowoomba Catholic Schools RSE programme. These lessons are provided to us by TCSO and are designed to ensure that the Personal Development and Promoting the Health of Individuals and Communities strands of the Health and Physical Education Curriculum are covered. Lessons are also structured and designed to provide a Catholic perspective on this topic to encompass the beliefs of being in catholic school and system.
The Daniel Morcombe curriculum is also embedded into this unit of work so that students are provided with the safety perspective concurrently.
Please be assured that the content covered within these lessons are handled with the sensitivity that is needed. If you would like to view the resources which are being used in these lessons, plese contact Kylie Williams or Katie Davis via the school office.
2024 Enrolments - all year levels
We are currently taking enrolments for 2024 in all year levels. If you know of anyone who is interested in enroling their child at St Joseph's for 2024 and would like more information please tell them to make contact with the school office or find our enrolment information and forms on the school website. The flyer below has been placed on the school's Facebook page. Please feel free to share to your friends and the wider community and tell them how great St Joseph's is.
God bless,
Kylie Williams

Father's Day!
Father’s Day is a national celebration to honour our dads, to reflect on what it means to be a father and acknowledge the important role fathers of all kinds have in the lives of their children. The Catholic Church began supporting the celebration of fatherhood during a customary day as early as the 14th century. The Feast Day of Saint Joseph was used as a solemnity to honour Joseph as the father of baby Jesus and his example of ideal fatherhood.
The modern Father’s Day, as we know it today, began in the USA in 1908 when a memorial service was held to remember 361 men who were killed in a coal mining accident in West Virginia. After this, Sonora Smart Dodd campaigned for the creation of a day to honour fathers and husbands the same way we did for our mothers and wives with Mother’s Day. Sonora Smart Dodd’s first Father’s Day event was held on June 19, 1910 in Washington and was celebrated with church services and celebrations. Father’s Day was surprisingly slow to take off in popularity, unlike Mother’s Day.
Families today have many different father-figures and even though the way the day is celebrated varies between families we know that the most important thing to remember is that the role of all fathers should still reflect the example St Joseph set for us over 2 000 years ago.
Next Monday we celebrated Father’s Day as a school community. This was a special time for us to celebrate the wonderful male-figures in our lives. There will be bacon and egg sandwiches available for those father-figures from 8am, followed by a Liturgy in the hall. We thank our staff for hosting the BBQ for us to gather as a community.
Learning at St Joeys
Term 3 has seen us cover a lot of great learning and have had some great fun!
Dance - This term, students have learnt the elements of dance and used these to explore various types of dances. They have responded to dances from other cultures by identifying the similarities and differences to their own and the ways the elements of dance have impacted the message. Students will perform a dance they have practiced and provide a peer review.
In P-2, students have focused on the Brown Jug Polka, Knees up Mother Brown and The Galopede. They performed at least one of these dances in a small group and composed their own dance in response to a stimulus (music).
Year 3-6, students have focused on partner dances, including the Progressive Jive and the Pride of Erin. They performed at least one of these dances in a pair and composed their own dance in response to a stimulus (music).
Auslan - Students have continued to develop their skills in Auslan with many using these skills throughout the day when they hear a word they know. They have especially enjoyed being able to learn signs that link directly to their classroom. Students are continuing to learn about deaf awareness which helps them to understand that Auslan is a language with social parameters just like any other language.
In P-2, students have discovered how to appropriately greet each other in Auslan. They have also learnt how to ask questions and give responses in relation to themselves.
In 3-6, students have been able to start conversations with each other and use their knowledge to communicate with the teacher. They have played cooperative games that utilize the new skills learnt.
Health and Physical Education - In Health this term, students have been looking at ways to keep our bodies and minds healthy. They have learnt about healthy choices when it comes to what we eat and what we do. Students have participated in Relationship and Sexual Education lessons to help better understand how the body changes and grows.
In Physical Education lessons, the Prep students have focused on fundamental movements and the use of equipment. In Year 1-2, students have focused on developing ball skills with an emphasis on throwing, catching and kicking. They had to describe why these were important skills and how the action might change based on the game being played. In Year 3-6, students participated in a fitness challenge. They tracked individual progress across the term to see what improvements and growth were made. Students designed an appropriate fitness circuit for a friend that incorporated the four types of fitness.
Students in all year levels participated in hockey lessons provided by Toowoomba Hockey where stick and ball and coordination skills were a focus.
HaSS (year 3-6) - In Term 3, students learnt about different environments around the world environments. They made personal connections to places they have seen or read about. Students identified the importance of vegetation and the different biomes across the globe. They researched the various biomes and presented this information through the creation of a poster, displaying the key features and information found.
I look forward to more great learning in Term 4.
God Bless,
Mrs Katie Davis

Student Safety
EVERY CHILD HAS THE RIGHT TO FEEL SAFE
It is a legislative requirement that all non-state schools have at least two nominated staff members to whom a student can report the behaviour of another staff member that the student considers inappropriate. We call these specially trained staff members School Student Protection Contacts, or SSPCs. Each SSPC has been nominated by the principal in recognition of their integrity, approachability and knowledge in the area of student protection. Whilst students are encouraged to speak up to any trusted adult in the school community, it is important that they know they can access these specific staff members at any time should they have worries, queries or concerns. You will have noticed posters throughout the school depicting our current SSPCs. The SSPCs are also published on our school website along with information about our student protection processes. In everything we do at St Joseph's Tara student safety is our highest priority, therefore the SSPCs at our school are key personnel in our overall safeguarding processes. Please see the poster below depicting our current SSPC team.
