St Joseph's, Tara - Term 3 Week 4 2024 Newsletter!
Our Vision & Mission Statements
From the Principal
Welcome to the Term 3 Week 4 Newsletter!
QUALITIES OF A LIFELONG LEARNER
What a fabulous start we have had with introducing the revised Qualities of a Lifelong Learner. As you will have seen, we started with the Learner Quality of Resilience. Students have taken on this quality with enthusiasm and have been striving to be successful in displaying the success criteria in all that they do. Congratulations to them all! We have seen playground and classroom incidents and dysregulation of behaviour decrease which is a great indication that what we are doing is working.
The new Learner Quality focus over the next few weeks will be Self-Motivation. A Parent Portal message was sent out earlier this week for families to see the success criteria for this quality which students will be working towards.
Another new initiative to support students being the best versions of themselves that they can possibly be is Golden Time. This system is a recognition for those students who, across the span of a week, can achieve the success criteria of:-
- 100% attendance at school for the week (including being on time)
- Organised to come to school with hats, lunches, water bottles etc
- Wearing the correct school uniform
- Positive behaviours in the classroom
- Positive behaviours in the playground
On most weeks, Golden Time will be celebrated on a Monday afternoon for the half hour before assembly. If for some reason we cannot do the session on Monday, then another time during the week will be arranged.
CAMEL RACES AND PARADE
Wow! What a fabulous day of celebrations it was with the Tara community today as we participated as a school in the Cultural Festival Book Week Parade. As my first Camel Races and Cultural Festival experience it was certainly wonderful to see the community together and the students having so much fun. Congratulations to all our amazing parents as well for the great costumes. You are all so very creative!
TARA AND DISTRICT ATHLETICS
Yesterday, seven of our amazing students participated at the Tara & District Athletics Carnival. This was a new record for St Joseph’s as we have never had so many students selected for this carnival. They all represented themselves and the school with pride and certainly displayed our Learner Qualities of Resilience and Self-Motivation across the day.

RURAL FIRE AWARENESS WEEK
A big thank you to Darryl McCloud from Tolmah Rural Fire Brigade for visiting the school today as part of Rural Fire Awareness Week. Darryl spoke to the students about what his role is as a volunteer, why they volunteer and some important information about fires, controlled burns, staying safe in and around fires and much more. The students really enjoyed the big yellow truck that was bought for them to look at as well.
Thank you to Mr Ben Aylott for organising this us.
God bless,
Kylie Williams

From the APRE
TARCOOLA VISITS
Connecting with the community is a large part of the MacKillop Club leader’s role. The students are loving their visits to Tarcoola every 3 weeks.
Their first visit this term was to participate in ten-pin bowling with the students taking the leader board by storm until the residents got their groove and overtook them.
This week the MacKillop Club took some Prep and Year 1 buddies to play Bingo. This was a great opportunity for the little people of our school to begin participating in community events. It also gave them a chance to practice their number recognition skills and put them on show. Everyone did a great job with chocolates as the incentive to cover all their numbers correctly.
Learning at St Joeys
From Year 2-3 Classroom
English and Literacy
Year 3
Students will identify how texts can be created for similar purposes but different audiences and identify the audience and purpose of informative texts through the use of language features and images. They will identify how images extend the meaning of a text and demonstrate how to extend vocabulary.
Students will identify the purpose of layout features in print and digital texts using words for navigation. They will describe how texts use language features and paragraphs to group and organise related information and extended topic-specific vocabulary and meaning in different contexts. Students will plan, create, edit and publish an informative text, using visual features, appropriate form and layout, grouping ideas into simple paragraphs using correct tense, topic-specific vocabulary and correct spelling of high frequency and phonetically regular words.
Year 2
Students will investigate how interpersonal language choices vary depending on context, identify how informative texts are organised, and use specific language features. They will identify how similar topics and information are presented in different text types. Students will identify the audience and text features within an informative text, including images which add meaning, in print and online. They will experiment with and begin to make conscious choices of vocabulary to suit the topic, create sentences which use noun and verb groups to express ideas. Students will recognise that capital letters are used in titles and commas are used to separate items in a list. They will create and edit a short informative multi-modal presentation for familiar audiences and purposes using an appropriate text structure and topic-specific vocabulary.
Religion
Year 2 and 3
Students will identify the meanings of Christian creation stories and scriptural texts and the ways in which human beings are called to be co-creators and stewards of creation. They will investigate ways in which Christians from the past have responded to being co-creators and stewards by caring for creation. Students will make connections between scriptural texts about respecting human life and all of creation and their own experiences. They will explore and create a plan to solve an environmental or well-being problem within the classroom or school. Students will compare and contrast their actions and behaviour with the moral duty of caring for all creation. They will identify the features of the Bible.
Mathematics
Year 3
Students will learn to solve two- and three-digit addition and subtraction problems using a variety of strategies such as place value to partition, rearranging and regrouping numbers. They will recognise mathematical modelling to solve practical additive and multiplicative problems including financial transactions. Students will interpret and communicate their solutions. They will use efficient mental strategies to computate larger numbers without a calculator. Students will recognise and represent unit fractions and their multiples in different ways. They will combine fractions with the same denominator to complete the whole. Students will recognise and explain the connection between addition and subtraction as inverse operations. They will identify the unknown value in number sentences. Students will recall and demonstrate proficiency with multiplication facts for 3, 4, 5 and 10 and extend and apply facts to the related division fact. They will identify and continue algorithms involving a sequence of steps or patterns. Students will create their own algorithm to investigate numbers in patterns.
Year 2
Students will recognise mathematical modelling to solve practical additive and multiplicative problems including money transactions. They will interpret and communicate their solutions. Students will solve one- and two-digit addition and subtraction problems using part-part-whole reasoning and multiply and divide one-digit numbers using a variety of calculation strategies such arrays, repeated addition and partitioning. They will recall addition facts to 20 and applied these to related subtraction facts. Students will recall multiplication facts for twos and connect these to division using doubling and halving. Students will recognise, describe and represent one-half as 2 equal parts and connect halves, quarters and eighths through repeated halving. They will recognise, describe and create additive patterns that increase or decrease by a constant amount using numbers, shapes and objects and identify the missing elements in a pattern.
Science
Students will explore questions through an inquiry process to identify representations of contemporary Australia as states and territories. They will discover the countries and places of First Nations Australians prior to colonisation. Students will explore the location of Australia’s neighbouring regions and countries. They will discover the ways First Nations Australians in different parts of Australia are interconnected with country and place. Students will identify the similarities and differences between places and neighbouring countries in terms of their natural, managed and constructed features.

Wellbeing Matters
Student Safety
EVERY CHILD HAS THE RIGHT TO FEEL SAFE
It is a legislative requirement that all non-state schools have at least two nominated staff members to whom a student can report the behaviour of another staff member that the student considers inappropriate. We call these specially trained staff members School Student Protection Contacts, or SSPCs. Each SSPC has been nominated by the principal in recognition of their integrity, approachability and knowledge in the area of student protection. Whilst students are encouraged to speak up to any trusted adult in the school community, it is important that they know they can access these specific staff members at any time should they have worries, queries or concerns. You will have noticed posters throughout the school depicting our current SSPCs. The SSPCs are also published on our school website along with information about our student protection processes. In everything we do at St Joseph's Tara student safety is our highest priority, therefore the SSPCs at our school are key personnel in our overall safeguarding processes. Please see the poster below depicting our current SSPC team.
